As the world begins to emerge from COVID-19, what new technologies will next take root in the health care system and how will those affect medical costs? This session will review recent research from the SOA Health Section on how new technologies are spread and adopted. Particular focus will be given to emerging modes of consumer engagement and highly-focused gene and cell therapies that are breaking new ground in combating rare diseases. Description: The supplemental health market is changing. Carriers are looking to simplify claims processes, proactively identify missed claim opportunities, and reduce barriers to claim payment. As a result, more and more companies are looking at ways to use data from medical diagnostic and treatment codes. Take an introductory look at the most used medical codes—ICD (9 and 10), CPT, and HCPCS. Discuss the history and purpose of each code system and decipher the structure. Dive into how medical codes can be used in the supplemental health market (automatic claims adjudication, fraud identification, pricing), as well as common pitfalls encountered when using medical coding. By attending this session, you will have a basic understanding of the different types of medical codes, their actuarial applications, and common pitfalls.

While an increase in data can generally be perceived as good, it is important to remember that current privacy practices need to be maintained, if not strengthened, to continually protect healthcare members. The COVID-19 pandemic helped fuel digital medicine data, but it also created new avenues for privacy to potentially be compromised (i.e. healthcare employees using personal devices while working from home). Digital medicine data is a very powerful asset, but it is also a massive responsibility. If mishandled, this data can cause more harm than good.
